Nurses for Nursing Homes

$275 Million in New Funding Supporting over 4,000 Nurses—

and the Bigger Picture

In my previous article, “Nursing Left Out: How a Federal Definition Change Could Impact the Workforce”, I discussed concerns about the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to exclude nursing from its original definition of professional degree programs for purposes of federal student loan limits. That decision raised important questions about access to graduate nursing education, the preparation of advanced practice nurses, and the future of an already strained healthcare workforce.

Now, a new federal initiative offers a different kind of financial support: the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced $275 million to recruit and retain nurses in nursing homes. Although these two developments address different workforce needs, together they highlight an important question: How is federal funding supporting nurses who are entering the profession while also affecting those seeking advanced nursing education?

A New Opportunity: $275 Million for Nurses in Nursing Homes:

CMS’s new initiative, “Nurses for Nursing Homes” is designed to attract and retain nursing professionals in long-term care facilities, particularly in rural communities and areas experiencing significant nursing workforce shortages.

According to CMS’s official website, the program is expected to support more than 4,000 nurses nationwide. “CMS has committed $100 million, with states contributing at least another $175 million, bringing the total investment to $275 million.”

Unlike traditional student financial aid, this initiative connects financial incentives to employment in qualifying nursing homes. Eligible nursing students and licensed nurses may qualify for:

💰 Up to $40,000 in student loan repayment.

💰 A $10,000 stipend.

💰 Financial incentives in exchange for a three-year service commitment at a qualifying nursing home.

Where the beef?

The initiative is funded through civil monetary penalties collected by CMS and states from nursing homes. Its stated purpose is to strengthen the nursing workforce, improve staffing stability, and support the quality of care provided to nursing home residents.

***** For nursing students considering employment in long-term care, this program could offer a meaningful opportunity to reduce educational debt while beginning or advancing a nursing career. For licensed nurses, it may provide a financial incentive to work in communities where recruiting and retaining qualified staff has been difficult.

The Bottom Line:

Supporting Today's Nurses and Tomorrow's Workforce

The $275 million Nurses for Nursing Homes initiative is a significant investment in addressing staffing challenges in long-term care. For eligible nurses and nursing students, it may offer a valuable opportunity to receive financial assistance while serving residents in communities that need nursing professionals.

But this opportunity should not obscure the separate challenges surrounding the financing of graduate nursing education.

Supporting the nursing workforce requires more than recruiting nurses into existing vacancies. It also requires making it possible for qualified nurses to obtain the education needed to expand their skills, advance clinical practice, educate future nurses, and meet the evolving needs of patients.
