Occasionally, someone asks this question – 𝐖𝐡𝐲 would a Nurse want to be a Medical Coder? ​Obtaining the 𝐀𝐇𝐈𝐌𝐀 certifications >> 𝐂𝐂𝐒 (Clinical Coding Specialist) and 𝐂𝐂𝐒-𝐏 (Clinical Coding Specialist – Professional) has given me the knowledge to better understand healthcare provider coding and billing. Yes, while working for a payer, I was often put in the position to make decisions to pay/deny the provider’s claim. The Medical Review position requires broad clinical and reimbursement knowledge – which I had, but I realized that I needed the same, in-depth knowledge as the Provider to address Medical Codes and Coding the Medical Record. So, I sat out on the journey researching both AAPC and AHIMA, and decided that AHIMA would best give me the knowledge and professional leadership to add the skills to my career. And, this has proven to be true. Also, correcting one billing or payment issue will often result in correcting the same issue across multiple providers. This allows for the adjudication of several claims and avoids further delays in payment to providers.
