Global Nurse Leaders voice concern over US leaving WHO

U.S. leaving the World Health Organization as a member nation has the potential for significant impact on Nurses.
US leaving WHO has potential for Significant Impact on Nurses Globally now and long-term

The public health response to the US leaving WHO

has been serious with long-lasting implications to world health.

Global Nurse Leaders voice concern over US leaving WHO

The announcement by President Donald Trump to withdraw the U.S. and its funds from the WHO (World Health Organization) has left many global healthcare professionals, country leaders and Nurses in a huge Void.

Why this is Important >>>

The United States is a founding member and leader for the WHO – bringing together 194 countries --- most of the world.

💡The U.S. is a leading country for the rest of the world

💡Our pharmaceuticals (medications and drugs) have global impact

💡The U.S. has expert medical doctors and Nurses that contribute globally and to the WHO

💡The U.S. leading institutions provide research and development to global health events

💡As a leading nation, the U.S. plays a central role in shaping global healthcare governance

💡💡Nurses are on the “front line” for healthcare

Some concerns expressed:

>>> children may not get vaccinations who otherwise would have had the opportunity.

>>>> public health --- people in lower economic economies won't have access (or limited access) to healthcare – a potential for greater healthcare risk.

>>>> global disease surveillance alerting the nations for health events and crisis (although, the WHO was certainly lacking in 2020 when COVID came on the scene).

>>>> decrease and lack of research knowledge that the U.S. brings to the global presence.

>>>> potentially, risk of fatal diseases erupting (smallpox and polio come to mind).

It’s not just “the money” (💰💰), but a gap and loss of global Health Intelligence access  to healthcare, and contribution to healthcare research.

I do not disagree that reforms are needed and some reforms we could classify as "urgently needed" as President Trump has noted. As a global leader, the US has an obligation and consciousness to help those countries and people in need.

The outcome >>> without the U.S. at “the table” the WHO table, the U.S. has taken on a risk that decisions can be made that could have an untoward outcome for Americans.

Is the WHO “stronger” than the countries that it leads? It is noted that the WHO does not have the legal authority to force any country to do what it says, China is one example that “apparently” did not cooperate during the COVID pandemic. Together, all countries and people have the opportunity to live healthy lives.

Fact: there is a "global" shortage of Nurses .... (read more here)

👩‍⚕️ Nurses are “The Frontline” in healthcare and are critically important for Global health.

Creating an environment with the potential for disease to manifest will continue to strain the Nursing workforce.

👩‍⚕️ The American Nurses Association (ANA), International Council of Nurses (ICN) and other Healthcare organizations have voiced significant concern over the U.S. decision to exit the WHO.

👩‍⚕️ Public health nurses, Travel nurses, Nursing educators & researchers will be greatly affected. Disease preparedness will likely suffer --- fewer Nurses with less resources to perform in a crisis.

A better approach >>>

Lead with efficacy. Can the leading countries and leading executives NOT find “meaningful dialogue” to solve World problems? We need this to live safely now and especially in the near future.

Are all of us not “safer” with health and healthcare when nation countries work together? …. Thinking of the most recent event --- COVID?

Global Nurse Leaders voice concern over US leaving WHO .... Why you ask?

🌍 Disease can spread quickly ... COVID-19 is still fresh in our minds.

🌎 To put it more simply >>> viruses don't stop at national borders.

🗺️ Populations are mobile in our world today …. An infectious outbreak can easily travel to another country.
