National Nurses Day is an annual observance held on May 6th
to honor the nursing profession.
This kicks off the official start for National Nurses Week
to celebrate and honor Nurses in the U.S.
National Nurses Week is more than a calendar observance—it’s a moment to recognize the skill, compassion, and resilience that nurses bring to healthcare every single day. Nurses are often the first point of care for patients and remain so throughout the care continuum. This week offers a chance to pause and acknowledge a profession that quietly carries an extraordinary responsibility.
AI included but ….. Nursing is human:
At the heart of nursing is a deeply human connection; yes, some AI but nursing is at the core “human”. Nurses don’t just administer treatments or monitor vitals—they listen, comfort, advocate, and sometimes simply sit with patients in their most vulnerable moments. These small, often unseen acts are what transform clinical care into compassionate healing, and they are worth celebrating just as much as any medical breakthrough.
Did you know >>> how our profession is changing?
Modern nursing is becoming increasingly complex as healthcare evolves in both scope and technology. Today’s nurses are not only caregivers, but also educators, leaders, specialists, and advocates for the profession. As consumers become more informed and technology becomes more integrated into care, nurses are continuously challenged to expand their skills and adapt to new ways of delivering care. Whether in advanced practice roles or bedside care, nurses are essential to shaping the future of healthcare—and their contributions extend far beyond what many people realize.
Over the past year, the profession has also been part of an important national conversation around education and access. Recent changes from the Department of Education placed nursing programs in the “graduate” category rather than recognizing them as “professional” degrees.
As a result, students pursuing advanced nursing education are now subject to a fixed federal loan cap of $20,500 per year, with a lifetime limit of $100,000. This marks a significant shift from the previous model, where borrowing could more closely reflect the full cost of education. (I explore this topic further in a previous post.)
⚠️ Current challenges:
As we celebrate, it’s also important to recognize the challenges nurses face—from workforce shortages to evolving education pathways and financial barriers. These issues don’t just affect nurses; they directly impact the quality and accessibility of care for everyone. Supporting nurses means advocating for systems that allow them to thrive.

👉 over-time:
The observance expanded into what we now call National Nurses Week, celebrated May 6–May 12 (ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday)
It is an honor to celebrate with all Nurses across the continuum of care –
clinical, data, administrative, informatics
